By the time I get to sleep

I began leaving my door open at night.
And the strangest things happened
While I slept. Dreams were moving there
In the dark, upright and with hulking shoulders,
Always fading from view.

I began to call out, lips bud-pursed and set
Like a cliff face. And still they came, demagogues
In the manner of shadows, friends alike.
And I saw you there in the doorway,
Leather jacket at the burlesque show,
Blue-necked ribbon at the beach.

I have seen you here before. Jewelled with breath,
Perfect as life. Hands clasped across a table,
Books substitute meaning, or something like that.
I called out and found you there in the door,
Knees slouching, comet where a face should be,
A halo sequence emitting light.
